The defeat of Democrats in the Senate vote on impeachment of US President Donald Trump was from a series of long-expected surprises, like the onset of winter in utilities. Everyone knew that the vote was coming, and that the Democrats would lose it, followed by their electoral disaster, but when it happened, everyone was extremely surprised.
